“It's hard to imagine a more impressive and passionate rendering of Malian music on classical guitar.”
—Afropop Worldwide

South African musician Derek Gripper conjures anew a centuries-old musical heritage, interpreting kora (21 string harp) compositions for solo classical guitar. He has created a repertoire of arrangements of African music, based on transcriptions of works by Toumani Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, and others. Other influences on Mr. Gripper include the multiple layers in the music of Oliver Messiaen, the African-influenced structures of Steve Reich, and guitar arrangements of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

With dramatic live camera work highlighting the virtuosic skills on stage.

The HSO kicks off its 2016-2017 season with a program of music with global flair! Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol is one of the most famous orchestra showpieces, a vividly brilliant composition based on Spanish folk melodies. Inspired by the collection of Middle Eastern and Indian tales “The Thousand and One Nights,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade brings to vibrant life the story of the young wife of a Sultan who tells tales to her husband to forestall his plan to kill her. Rodrigo’s extraordinarily beautiful Concierto de Aranjuez for Guitar and Orchestra is unquestionably his best known work, and established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the 20th century. Don’t miss artist Sarah Paolucci’s exhibit in the lobby, featuring gorgeous paintings of HSO musicians’ hands!

Please join us for a pre-concert talk, led by HSO Music Director Carolyn Kuan, one hour prior to curtain each day.

Welcome to Hartford Public Library's new Acoustic Open Mike program, hosted by Bill Katz. This musical event is open to all who play an instrument and/or sing. And without an audience to listen to the musical review, we would only be half complete. A marriage of one is no fun.

This inaugural event will take place on Tuesday, July 12 between 6 and 8PM in The Hartford Room on the third floor. Sign-up begins at 5:45. Everyone is welcome and we are hoping for a few surprise guest performers.

Yale Guitar Extravaganza
Saturday, Feb. 20

All-day event offers concerts, talks, and master classes, featuring Yale alumni

Guitar Extravaganza 2016: Celebrating YSM Alumni will take placeSaturday, February 20, 2016. The event, which is presented every two to three years at the Yale School of Music, offers a daylong immersion in all things guitar: concerts, workshops, demonstrations, and more.

Benjamin Verdery, the founder and director of the Guitar Extravaganza, is celebrating 20 years on the Yale faculty. This year's Guitar Extravaganza celebrates alumni of the Yale School of Music, many of whom will be featured performers and panelists.

The headline performer is classical guitarist Marc Teicholz, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “both technically gifted and musical to the core.” A faculty member of the San Francisco Conservatory, Teicholz will perform a solo recital at 8 pm in Morse Recital Hall.

Other concert artists include Duo Ditirambo (viola and guitar) and Z.o.o. guitar duo, both of which will perform in a 5:30 pm concert. Earlier in the afternoon, guitarists Daniel Corr and Max Zuckerman will team up for a 2 pm recital of solo repertoire. Everyone in this group of performers is a graduate of the Yale School of Music
The day opens with a concert featuring ensembles of young guitarists from Heritage High School and local Suzuki programs. The high school guitarists will also work with Benjamin Verdery in a master class, which takes place at 3:15 pm. The members of the Z.o.o. guitar duo will also lead a master class, which takes place at 11:30 am.

Panel discussions include "Is the CD obsolete in 2016?," a conversation about the state of recordings, and "Life After Music School," which will be led by John Olson, president of the New York Classical Guitar Society.

The Yale Guitar Extravaganza is presented with the generous support of the D'Addario Foundation.
