  • Lorena Garay Surcari Duo

Puerto Rican guitarist Lorena Garay and Chilean multi-instrumentalist Eugenio Huanca perform an irresistible mix of Latin American guitar styles. Lorena's guitar arrangements and her sweet yet passionate playing style beautifully blend her classical influences with her Latin sound. Eugenio's intense way of playing the panpipes, pan flute, charango, Venezuelan cuatro and many other Latin American instruments is simply mesmerizing. Join Lorena and Eugenio as they play haunting melodies, syncopated rhythms and charming strums from the Andes, South America and the Spanish Caribbean!

Lorena Garay is a multi-award-winning guitarist from Puerto Rico. Lorena earned her MMus SCL from the Hartt School, where she received the Guitar Department Award. She holds a BMus SCL from the Conservatory of Music of PR, where she received the String Department Gold Medal Award. Her other awards include the Identidad Latina's Latino de Oro Music Award. In 2018, Lorena’s ensemble, Surcari, received the Arts For Learning Connecticut’s Performing Artist of the Year Award. In addition, Surcari’s self-titled album won third place for Best South and Central American Album at the 2009 Just Plain Folks Independent Music Awards.

Eugenio Huanca, a native of Chile and a long-time member of Surcari, has dedicated his life to playing music from Latin America and the Andes. Eugenio is a highly accomplished musician who builds his own musical instruments. He has traveled throughout South, Central and North America performing on national television in each country he has visited. Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Smithsonian Institute are among the most prestigious venues where he has performed. Eugenio's former group, Guamary, participated in the soundtrack of the PBS documentary: "Flight of the Condor.”
