Born and raised in Wolcott, Connecticut, Joel Weik was inspired by the sounds of instrumental music at an early age. The gift of his mother’s Michael Hedges, Michael Manring, Alex De Grassi and Preston Reed cassette tape collection, which had been copied off her roommate’s vinyl records many years earlier, inspired and impressed him, eventually leading him to discover fingerstyle guitarists Don Ross and Laurence Juber. With his father's Washburn acoustic guitar in hand, Weik began experimenting with alternate guitar tunings and two-hand fingerstyle techniques in his early teens. Winner of the “Best Instrumentalist” award at the 2011 Grand Band Slam, and an Ovation Guitars-sponsored artist, Weik also formed a successful instrumental world fusion trio, String Theorie, which won the Best New Band award at the aforementioned event.
